Coconino Community College, Lone Tree Campus

The 2009 Northern Arizona Sustainable Living Workshops will provide techniques and ideas for you to “roll up your sleeves” and be more sustainable in your everyday life.  Creative and informative, hands-on workshops will focus on responsible practices and options in the areas of Food, Consumer Choices, Energy, Transportation, Building, and Water.  Plan to attend to learn more about making personal choices for an enjoyable, responsible, sustainable lifestyle.  All-day admission is $10.  To find out more and register to attend visit www.nazsla.org

• The City of Flagstaff Sustainability Commission, together with the Flagstaff Sustainability Program, invites Flagstaff residents to get involved with the Flagstaff Community Sustainability Plan.  The plan aims to provide a roadmap for creating a more sustainable Flagstaff.
• Community participation and education are keys to making Flagstaff more sustainable.  Please visit
www.flagstaff.az.gov/sustainablefor information on how to get involved.

• Please remember to bring your trash/recycle can in from the curb after it is emptied.  Empty cans left on the curb can be mistaken as full cans and picked up by City Collections drivers.  These unnecessary pick ups increase greenhouse gas emissions in the Flagstaff community.  In addition, they wastes fuel, time and money.  Sidewalks clear of trash and recycle cans make Flagstaff a more "walkable" community.  For more information on your scheduled trash/recycle pick up day, please call 928.779.0668

• The Flagstaff Sustainability Program wishes to thank the dedicated members of the City of Flagstaff Sustainability Commission for their efforts in working toward community sustainability.  Commission meetings are open to the public and take place the second Wednesday of each month, 4:30 PM at City Hall. Visit www.flagstaff.az.gov/sustainablefor more information.

A Bag Central Station – Where Plastic Bags Belong
Flagstaff Bag Central Station - Where Bags Belong Program is coming to Flagstaff.  Bag Central Station Where Bags Belong Program is administered in partnership between the  City of Flagstaff and the Arizona Food Marketing Alliance through their local members.  Plastic  bags are not accepted through the City of Flagstaff comingled recycling program.
Bag Central Station – Where Plastic Bags Belong is a program that aims to increase the use of reusable shopping bags and increase the recycling of plastic bags. As a Program partner, local grocery and retail stores will have plastic bag recycling drop off containers in highly visible locations. In addition, retail and grocery stores agree to promote reusable shopping bags and decrease their use of plastic bags through customer and employee education.  Flagstaff’s Bag Central Station will increase plastic bag recycling and will have a significant impact on reducing the amount of waste in Flagstaff’s solid waste stream.  Please follow this BAG Link or contact  Stephanie Smith for more information on what the City of Flagstaff and local grocery/retail stores are doing to celebrate.

Vehicles:

1.      Car pool – This one is pretty self explanatory.  Car pooling is a great way to conserve fuel.  This works especially great if you live outside the city, but commute in.  The further outside of city limits, the more fuel you will save.  Carpooling…it’s like hitchhiking, but without the creepy stranger.

2.      Calm down when driving – Aggressive driving does not help your fuel consumption.  Heavy use of the gas and brake pedals not only increases your fuel consumption, but it also puts additional wear and tear on your vehicle.  Try coasting to red lights instead of racing to them and slamming on the brakes.  This also gives the light extra time to turn green.   We all know how frustrating it can be to drive around in Flagstaff sometimes, but chill out and your vehicle will thank you.  By the way, this tip doesn’t cost a cent.

3.      Replace your air filter – Replacing your air filter when it is dirty can increase fuel efficiency, and allow your vehicle to perform better.  Think of it this way, when you have breathing problems, you’re probably not going to go out and run a marathon.  Your car is the same way.  Let your car breathe correctly, and it will perform better for you.
